Day of fool?

What a day! A project without proper scope management, what would it look like? I would never say that my weakness is overlooking big pictures. What I am experiencing is a project with vision, direction but without proper scope. In other words, no proper road map.

In terms of scope management, there are five processes: scope definition, scope planning, create WBS, scope monitoring, and, scope verification. How to implement such whole management method is a big issue. Old habits with some agreements make the project really out of the track. Customer oriented approach should not be interpreted as 'leading by customers'. To my understanding, it should be interpreted as 'fulfill customers requirements with proper methods implemented'. If it is not the case, there is no need to have a role of system analyst. Only business analyst would be enough.

System design should cater for big picture and details inside. Focusing on details would not lead the project succeed. Details raised by customers would be gold plating for most of the time. If there is no concrete foundation, how to plate gold on it?! You can't use gold plate to shape a foundation, that is too costly.

How would a project manager handle this situation....? Interesting...
